What is an anesthesia ventilator?

An anesthesia ventilator is a biomedical device used in the field of anesthesia and critical care procedures to assist patients in breathing during surgery or while they are under anesthesia. It plays an important role in maintaining a patient's oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, ensuring their safety and well-being during medical procedures.

Types of Anesthesia ventilator:

Diverse mechanical ventilation systems are used to assist patient during medical procedure while they are under anesthesia, including bellow-type ventilator, piston type ventilator. These are two types of anesthesia ventilator are frequently used in hospitals.

1. Bellow type ventilator: This type of anesthesia ventilator consist of bellows or bag made up of flexible rubber or silicon. These bellow contract and expand to produce airflow. When these bellows are compressed by driving pressurized gas, they deliver force air or oxygen into the patient’s lungs. When they expand, the patient is able to exhale passively causing negative pressure. This type of ventilator is operated manually by a healthcare professional who squeezes the bellow in order to create air pressure. These are generally used in the emergency situations like Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

2. Piston type ventilator: As the name suggests, it utilizes a piston mechanism to cause airflow. The piston is fitted in the cylinder. To produce alternating positive and negative pressure, the piston oscillates inside the cylinder. It then reverses the process to allow exhalation. They can be manually operated but nowadays, they are often used in advance healthcare settings. They offer accurate control over certain variables like tidal volume, respiratory rate, and inspiration-expiration (I: E) ratio. They are used in intensive care units (ICU) when patients need ventilation for long term.

Types of ventilation modes:

  • Assist Control (AC) Mode: In the assist-control (AC) mode, the ventilator produces a preset amount of breaths each minute. The ventilator offers additional help if the patient starts breathing on their own.
  • Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation (SIMV): It integrates required breaths at a set pace with breaths that the patient initiates. Patients are given some control over their ventilation in this mode.
  • Pressure Support Ventilation (PSV): PSV lets the patient breathe on their own every time. It frequently works in combination with SIMV to improve patient comfort.
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP): During the whole breathing cycle, CPAP mode maintains a constant positive pressure in the airways. It is frequently applied to patients who require greater oxygen as well as non-invasive breathing.
  • Volume-Controlled Ventilation: These anesthesia ventilator offers a limited volume of oxygen to the patient’s lungs. Respiratory rate and inspiratory rate can be adjusted manually.
  • Pressure-Controlled Ventilation: The pressure-controlled ventilators allow healthcare professional to set the oxygen pressure level and tidal volume depending on patient lung adherence.

Benefits of anesthesia ventilator:

  • It offers accurate control over various ventilation parameters like tidal volume, respiratory rate, inspiratory rate, oxygen levels. This allows healthcare professionals to modify ventilation variables as per the patient requirements.
  • It maintains sufficient oxygen levels in the patient while they are under anesthesia or any other severe medical condition in order to prevent a condition of hypoxia (low oxygen levels in the patient’s blood).
  • It provides adequate removal of carbon dioxide from the exhaled breath of the patient to prevent hypercapnia (increase in CO2 levels in the bloodstream).
  • Anesthesia ventilation modes has the ability that can match a patient's natural breathing pattern, improving comfort and lowering the possibility of patient-ventilator a synchrony.
