In a bipap mode, a sleep apnea machine provides 2 pressures, One is IPAP(higher inspiratory positive airway pressure) and the second one is EPAP(lower expiratory positive airway pressure). In a bipap machine, there are multiple Bipap modes to assist the patient's breathing. What should be the BiPAP mode this doctor will prescribe to patient.
CPAP Mode : In this Bipap mode, BiPAP machine only works on continues positive airway pressure. There is no setting for IPAP and EPAP pressure if machine is working on CPAP mode. In this mode, the patient can use the BiPAP device as a cpap machine.
S Bipap Mode : S mode also known as spontaneous bipap mode. In S bipap mode all breaths are patient-triggered and cycled, that’s mean If the patient does not initiate the breath itself; there is no automatically delivered breaths by Bipap Machine.
During inspiration and expiration, the BiPAp machine applies pre-determined pressure. There is no automatically delivered inhaled breath, that's mean in S mode BiPAP machine relies on patient breath triggering effort. In short, in this bipap mode, all breathes initiate by patient.
ST Bipap Mode : In ST Mode, Breaths are patient-triggered and machine-triggered, as well as patient-cycled and machine-cycled. In this bipap mode, there is an option for time set. In ST bipap mode, We can set up backup breaths, as well as time. If the patient does not initiate the breath within the time limit, then the BiPAP machine will do it automatically. In short, In this bipap mode setting, a Bipap machine provides inspiratory positive airway pressure(IPAP) itself and also has a backup rate to ensure that you get an adequate number of breaths per minute even if you don't breathe naturally.
T Mode(bipap timed mode) : In this Bipap mode, all the breaths are delivered and set automatically by BiPAP Machine. As a result in this bipap mode, the machine works automatically according to the preset respiratory rate.
Table-Summary of above-mentioned BiPAP modes :
CPAP Mode in Bipap machine | Works on CPAP. There is only one pressure. |
S Bipap mode | All breaths are patient triggered and cycled. |
ST Bipap Mode | In set time, If the patient does not initiate the breath within the time limit, then the BiPAP machine will do it automatically. |
T Bipap Mode | the machine works automatically according to the preset respiratory rate. |
