Fluid and Blood Warmer

What is fluid warmer?
A fluid warmer is a medical device used in healthcare facilities for warming fluids prior to administration (intravenously or orally) to body temperature levels in order to prevent hypothermia in physically traumatized or surgical patients.
Blood warmers can be used to provide warm blood and fluids to those who need them in emergencies, operating rooms and intensive care units, and a hospital can maintain a number of warmers on a floor, so one is always available.
Standard fluid warmer is effective depending on how long intravenous fluids and blood products have contact with the hotter. In a slow intravenous fluid therapy protocol, the fluid warmer does not contribute significant heat transfer because of heat loss along the intravenous tubing between the warmer and the child, before the fluid reaches the child. For temperature regulation warming intravenous fluid is almost useless during maintenance therapy.

What are types of the fluid/blood warmer:
Blood warmers vary from simple coiled tubing in a warming bath to more sophisticated blood warming devices. In any institution which manages trauma patients or performs major surgical procedures, rapid transfusion systems are vital. The new generation of blood warmer is much higher than water blood warmers. They are using counter current heat exchange or microwave technology to quickly warm fluid along the fluid column length. The choice of blood warmer should be determined by size of the child, anticipated speed of blood loss, and expectation of costs. The intravenous (IV) tubing length and the IV catheter’s diameter also limit the rate of fast infusion.

Three main types:
1)Dry heat plate warmers:

  • Improves the capacity for the material heat transfer and allows temperature to increase to 41 °C
  • In the cassette between heat plates, the IV fluid is warmed.

2)Water bath warmers:

  • Warm IV fluids by preheated water;
  • Maximum temperature 380 °C and
  • At high infusion rates, the system is inefficient.

2)Intravenous fluid tube warmers:

  • An external layer allows warm water to flow down and then to a reservoir around this.
  • Heavy and long tubing and low flow efficiency only (20–30 ml/min).
  • Each one requires a warmer IV tube coil.
  • Fluid heating rate depends on heating system power
