What are Prostheses?

Prostheses, also known as prosthetic devices are artificial devices designed to replace or enhance a missing or impaired body part. A prosthetic serves as a replacement for a body part that may be absent from birth or lost due to accidents, amputation, or surgical removal. They are primarily used to restore the function and appearance of the lost body part, enabling individuals with limb loss or limb deficiencies to regain mobility and perform everyday tasks.

Orthopedic prostheses can be created for various body parts, including limbs (arms, legs), hands, feet, fingers, and even facial features. These devices are typically custom-made to fit the individual's unique anatomy and requirements. In cases where reconstructive surgery is not feasible or desired, a prosthesis can provide an alternative solution. For instance, it can be used after the removal of a nose or breast as part of cancer treatment.

Features of Protheses

Ortho prosthesis serves many features. Some of those are as follows:

  1. Customization: Prostheses are typically custom-made to match the individual's unique anatomy, ensuring a proper fit and function. They are designed and tailored to meet the specific needs and requirements of the wearer.
  2. Material Selection: Prosthesis can be constructed from a variety of materials, including lightweight plastics, carbon fiber composites, metals, and silicone. The choice of materials depends on factors such as durability, weight, comfort, and aesthetic considerations.
  3. Socket Design: The socket is the interface between the residual limb and the prosthesis medical. It should provide a secure and comfortable fit while distributing pressure evenly. Socket design may vary depending on the level of amputation and the specific needs of the individual.
  4. Mobility and Functionality: Prostheses aim to restore mobility and functionality to individuals with limb loss or limb deficiencies. Depending on the type of prosthesis, they may enable activities such as walking, running, grasping, gripping, and other specific movements.
  5. Control Mechanisms: Advanced prosthetic devices may incorporate control mechanisms that allow users to manipulate the prosthesis with greater precision. These mechanisms can include myoelectric sensors that detect muscle activity, enabling more intuitive control over the prosthesis
  6. Comfort and Suspension: Prosthesis in orthopaedics should be comfortable to wear for extended periods. They often incorporate suspension systems or methods to securely attach the prosthesis to the residual limb, providing stability and reducing movement or discomfort.

Types of Protheses

There are various types of prosthetic fitting designed to replace or enhance different body parts. Here are some common types of prostheses:

Hand prostheses:

Hand prostheses are artificial devices designed to replace a missing or non-functioning hand. They can be either cosmetic, providing a natural appearance, or functional, offering limited grasping and gripping capabilities. Advanced hand prostheses may have individually movable fingers and sensors for enhanced control, allowing users to perform various daily tasks and regain a sense of dexterity and independence.

Arm prostheses:

Arm prostheses are artificial devices created to replace all or part of a missing or non-functioning arm. They can range from simple cosmetic prostheses that restore the appearance of the arm to advanced functional prostheses with mechanical or myoelectric components, enabling users to perform a wide range of activities and regain a significant level of arm mobility and functionality. These prostheses are customized to fit the individual's unique anatomy and needs, aiming to improve quality of life and independence.

Finger prostheses:

Finger prostheses are designed to replace missing or non-functioning fingers. They can be cosmetic, providing a natural appearance, or functional, offering limited grasping and gripping capabilities. Advanced hand prostheses may have individually movable fingers and sensors for enhanced control.

Lower Limb Prostheses:

Lower limb prostheses are used by individuals who have undergone amputation or were born with limb deficiencies in the legs or feet. They can include below-knee (transtibial), above-knee (transfemoral), and through-knee (knee disarticulation) prostheses. These devices aim to restore mobility and enable walking or running.

Breast prostheses:
Breast prostheses are used by individuals who have undergone mastectomy or breast removal due to cancer or other medical conditions. These prostheses are typically made of silicone or other materials and are designed to restore the natural shape, weight, and feel of the breast.

Facial and oral prostheses:

Facial and oral prostheses are custom-made devices that restore or enhance facial features affected by trauma, surgery, or congenital conditions. These prostheses can include artificial eyes, ears, noses, and other facial components, providing a natural appearance and improving the individual's aesthetic and functional outcomes. Oral prostheses, such as dental implants or prosthetic teeth, can restore oral functions like chewing, speaking, and maintaining facial structure, significantly improving the quality of life for individuals with missing or damaged facial and oral structures.
